It’s Friday night and I’m back in DC wondering where to go to eat? U St, 14th or even H? Or shall I go to someplace I rarely visit? Taqueria La Placita is off the beaten path for sure. Unless someone tells you about this hidden gem, you wouldn’t know to stop here. It’s small, there’s little parking and the line goes out the door. The atmosphere is very chaotic and frenzied. But the locals love it, and so did I.Mostly everyone comes here for the street tacos. You can also choose carne asada, carnitas, chorizo, lengua or pork belly and they’re $2-3 per taco. But there are other choices such as breakfast, sopa, corn on the cob, etc. I ordered a couple of chorizo tacos up front, sat down and within minutes these loaded, mouth-watering bites were brought to my table with green and red habanero sauce. The sauces zesty and had a big kick. All the tacos were delicious The chorizo taco, coarsely chopped with pig fat is cooked until charred along with onions, poblano peppers, and warm spices. The heavenly creation gets stuffed into soft warm corn tortillas and topped with salsa verde, cilantro, tomatoes, onions and lettuce. The place has a wonderful Mexican vibe. The murals showing life in Mexico are beautiful and there is even outdoor seating with an alluring shrine of Mary. It’s as close to Mexico as you can get in the DMV.
Taqueria la Placita is known for the tacos al pastor made from the juicy spit-grilled pork.
