I visited a longtime bar on Tremont St, once owned by Celtic great Bill Russell. Slades serves traditional Southern food to an R&B & Soul soundtrack, and the place was just kicking. On the outside a mural paying tribute to Frederick Douglass. On the inside, a sign boasting that it’s doors have been opened since 1935.

I looked around the packed bar. People were laughing, dancing, their hands on shoulders, mostly women.
“What you having Hon?” Asked the bartender.
“Well, I’m from Georgia and love soul food. What do you suggest?”
“Wings are a must. We call them crack wings cuz they’re so good!”
I looked over the menu and settled for the grilled pork chops, candied yams and mac and cheese. Tonight we party like it’s 1999. Tomorrow we sober up then hit the road to chase another load.
