Profile
I just discovered a Vietnamese dumpling that is soft sweet and is perfect for breakfast or a light snack. It’s wrapped in banana leaf bestow a grassy, tea-like flavor.
I stumbled on Huong Binh Bakery in the famed Eden Center and decided to give it a try. Was in a bit of rush so I decided to try one of their ready-made dishes. Noticed they have my favorite Vietnamese pancake, Bot Chien, but I prefer to order mine from Infini-tea down the road.
The dish is pyramid-shaped and originates from Northern Vietnam. It’s quite small so you can eat a couple for breakfast or lunch.
The dough is made of rice flour and the filling includes ground pork, mushroom, shallot and quail egg.
The name Banh Gio means pork cake – but trust me the taste is more appealing than the name.
Even the look may not be that captivating, but once you take a bite, you’ll be amazed by the soft, chewy sweetness and the quail egg mixed with shredded pork oozing out of the dough. Yes it’s ricey chewy but the rice is not overly sticky
You’ll be amazed at how sweet and delightful it taste and you’ll probably ready to unwrap another one or take one on the road.
